Maple Leaf
Zoning
Workshops
As Seattle changes, play a role in the future of Maple Leaf. Make your voice heard and partner with others in creating a community where we can all grow, play, work, and live
How might we encourage thoughtful growth that takes the whole human being into account?
The goal of the zoning workshops is to generate ideas and build shared vision for future development in Maple Leaf. Zoning in Seattle has changed to accommodate growth and encourage affordability. The key question is how Maple Leaf can absorb density while maintaining our neighborhood’s character. Crafting effective plans around these issues will take time and commitment. Some of this work with have a concrete outcome, and some will involve building relationships and advocacy.
The workshop process
We meet approximately every two weeks. There are first-time participants as nearly every session. We do our best to get new participants acquainted with what we've done so far in their first session. Each session includes introductions, an information-sharing time, and time for idea generation or work on key areas of focus.
The key areas of focus that arose from trends identified at earlier meetings. Each of these focus areas has a small workgroup represented at most of the workshops:
- Developer relations
- Trees and green spaces
- Affordability and accessibility
- Transit, parking, and walkability
- Local business relations
As the workshops become more focused on producing outcomes, we also need individuals willing to take responsibility for these functions:
- Relationships with other neighborhood associations
- Informational updates on City-level discussions and decisions
- Communications to neighbors about our work
- Meeting logistics and support
- Meeting organization, content & facilitation

From the Community Council
We recognize the need for greater density in our neighborhood's future. As Maple Leaf evolves, we must create a balance between that density and ensuring that our residents have a say in the evolution of what makes our neighborhood a place we all love to live and grow in.
We see the MLCC as a valuable mechanism for our neighbors to provide input into this growth and look forward to working with the Mayor and the City Council to leverage this plan to introduce affordability, transportation, greenery, and walkability improvements that are driven by the needs of current and future residents.
